Kumiko Uyeda
I live in Oakland, California. I began piano lessons at the age of four in Japan and studied music in the United States at the University of the Pacific (B.M.), Manhattan School of Music (M.M.), and University of California Santa Cruz (Ph.D.). I feel that collaborations within music and art forms are essential ways to bring wellness to the world.
I'm a pianist...
My musical life has included training. My main teachers were Myron McTavish (Salinas, CA), Rex Cooper (Stockton, CA), Zenon Fishbein (NY, NY), Edna Golandsky (NY, NY), Mona Sills (Oakland, CA), and Burton Kaplan (Morris, NY).

As a teacher, I've taught piano for over 35 years. Currently, I am not teaching, but may resume teaching privately someday.
...a composer...
I am a self-taught composer.
...and an ethnomusicologist.
My research in ethnomusicology began with the indigenous Ainu people's music in Japan. I have also researched and taught Japanese traditional music. I have taught courses in ethnomusicology for the past 11 years at the University of California Santa Cruz, University of San Francisco, and University of the Pacific.
I’ve been playing music professionally since my mid-twenties. I feel that music is like breathing - an essential quality of life.
