   Kumiko Uyeda is a pianist, composer, and an ethnomusicologist living in Oakland, California, U.S.
    She began piano lessons at the age of four in Japan and studied music in the United States at the University of the Pacific, Manhattan School of Music, and University of California Santa Cruz.
   Kumiko performs in various genres, including western art music, Brazilian folk-jazz genre choro, and collaborates with poets, butoh dancers, and musicians from West African, Central Asian and Southeast Asian traditions.
   Her compositions include music for solo piano, popular-style songs, and music for avant-garde dance.
   She has been playing music professionally for all of her adult life and she feels that music is like breathing - an essential quality of life.
